According to reports, the fire started past 12:00 noon and quickly spread, with 16 firetrucks responding from as far as Dauin, San Jose, Valencia, Bacong, Sibulan, and Dumaguete. The fire was placed under control at around 2:15 in the afternoon, but not before causing one injury, identified as Steve Michael, 48, who suffered burns on his forehead, arms, fingers, and feet.
Arson investigators are now looking into an unattended cellphone being charged as the possible cause of the fire. The warehouse was reportedly used for storage and as a residential building, with combustible materials such as paints, thinner, and tires kept inside. Bantayan village chief Nerio Grapa, who was attending a meeting in Sea Dreams Dauin, had to rush back to personally supervise his people in making sure the fire did not spread to the barangay hall, which is situated next to the storage facility. All important documents and other items were taken out of the hall as a precaution.
This incident has caused concern and raised questions among residents and business owners in the area, especially those who are also using warehouses for their businesses. The investigation is ongoing, and updates will be provided as soon as they become available.
